In paragraph 5 of his despatch No. 80 of
November 18th (a copy of which was transmitted in
my despatch Number 10 of January 3rd) Sir Cecil Clementi
refers to the report that the Chinese authorities are
proposing to take over the interests in Chine of the
Great Northern and Eastern "xtension Telerraph Companies
and raises the question of the eventual effoot of any
such action on the position of the Chinese Telegraph
office in Hong Kong •

As regards the intentions of the Chinese
Government in this matter, I have the honour to refer
to Sir Viles Lempaun's despaton Number 1869 of December
30th. According to an official report the committee
referred to in paragraph 2 of that despatch decided
at its first meeting on December 19th to notify the
Cable Companies of the intention of the Ministry of
Communications to terminate their contracts on January
1st, 1931.

The right of the Chinese Telegraph Administra-
tion to maintain an office in Hong Kong dependa on their
Agreement of January 21st, 1984 with the Eastern Exten-
alon Telegraph Company which wes renewed by the Agree-
ment of July 11th, 1896, between the same parties and
